The project is in Phuket is the biggest island in Thailand, located in the Andaman Sea off southern Thailand. The island is mostly mountainous with a mountain range in the west of the island from the north to the south. Most of the island is covered in lush tropical forest with miles of white sandy beaches.

Volunteers are required to have had all relevant vaccinations for Hepatitis A & B, Tuberculosis (TB), Diphtheria, Rabies, Pertissus, Tetanus and Japanese Encephalitis before entering to projects.

Through our education program we aim to reduce poaching and deforestation, to gain support for our project and for the conservation movement in Thailand. The GRP is an effective resource for teaching the local community and foreign tourists. It attracts international students who wish to study gibbons. The GRP works with white-handed gibbons (Hylobates Lar), the most widespread of the four species of gibbon found in Thailand.

The routine work is divided into 4 main tasks.

    Twin
  • Quarantine and Rehabilitation Site : this involves food preparation, feeding, cage maintenance, cleaning, enrichment, and observation.

  • Reintroduction Site : this involves forest feeding, mapping and trail maintenance, follow up and data collection.

  • Conservation Education and Fund-raising : volunteers will give talks to tourists, educating them about the type of problems gibbons face living on the island with man.

  • Other: this could involve office administration tasks or generally helping out with the day to day running of the project.

It should also be noted that volunteers are not allowed to handle the gibbons; physical contact is allowed only in the presence and under the supervision of the Thai staff.

Volunteers work a six-day week usually for 8 hours per day.
