Adventurous volunteers who want to put something back and desire a change of perspective. ![]() Tiger & Elephant Project IndiaOur India Volunteer Safari is set in the North Eastern state of Assam and West Bengal, stretching from the Himalayas in the north to the Bay of Bengal in the South and borders Bhutan, Bangladesh and Nepal. Rich in culture and landscapes ranging from the snow capped Himalayas, the dramatic hill stations of Darjeeling, the foothill forests of the Dooars, the river Ganga, the hustle and bustle of Kolkata and the mangroves of the Sunderbans the state is a place of contrast and curiosity with plenty to explore and experience Volunteers will engage in a wide variety of activities as part of the project, involving themselves with the local community and supporting areas of conservation, patrolling and species monitoring as well as daily activities such as cooking and becoming part of the life of the Bodo People Volunteers will participate on the Elephant Programme, which involves monitoring and tracking wild elephants in an attempt to understand their behaviour, as well as patrolling with locals on elephant back. You will have a chance to participate in a homestay, cross the border to Bhutan and visit ancient sites of cultural significance Volunteers can expect to take get involved in the Elephant Programme which includes caring, tracking, monitoring and understanding the behaviour of these majestic animals. Patrol the jungle, often on Elephant back, as the Bodo people impart their knowledge and experience of their age old relationship with the elephants. Learn traditional songs and dances, methods of cooking and agriculture The role of volunteers is a supporting one, as well as useful and beneficial to the host community and surrounding environment Learning is at the heart of this placement, the friendly local Bodo people are willing to take you into their lives, teaching you their traditions and showing you their ancient culture and beliefs The first half of the project will be spent carrying out a wide variety of activities such as getting involved in the Elephant Programme and traditional methods of agriculture and farming. You’ll also learn traditional song and dance of the Bodo People and how to cook Bodo Recipes Volunteers will be able to take part in patrols with the villagers which include species monitoring as well as take a day visit over the border to Bhutan The second half of the placement will take place in Ultapani where you’ll stay with a local family and take part in daily activities such as species monitoring, traditional worship and learn the tradition of making Tambul (Betel nut).
