Flights, insurance and visas at your own expense. Very little spending money required whilst at Kwa Madwala. The programme - our shortest programme which forms the first 28 days of the 70 day programme.


Although relatively short in time there are a wide range of bush and wildlife experience for those with less time available. A number of off site trips are made including five nights on the Indian Ocean coastline in Mozambique.


Five days are spent working at a local school / orphange as part of an ongoing community project supported by Kwa Madwala. Lots of variety whilst learning about conservation, get involved with the local community and a chance to discover Mozambique.


This condensed itinerary gives you a snapshot of life on a private game reserve is highly cost effective and allows one to combine with onward travel. Age is no barrier and we welcome applicants from those looking at taking time out from work.

Location


The reserve is just south of Kruger National park. Nearest entry gate is at Malelane, 20 minutes drive away. The Swazi and Mozambique border are 30-40 minutes away.


Accommodation


Gazebo Lodge is your home in the heart of the reserve. Shared single sex bedrooms with en-suite bathroom. On site dining lapa, swimming pool, games room, small bar. Faces a small lake with resident hippo and crocodiles.


Health & Safety


This is of paramount importance both on and off the reserve. Our dedicated team of gap year Ranger and Coordinator are on hand 24/7. We only use highly reputable and fully licensed thirty parties for off property activities. We are registered with the Red Cross emergency helicopter service for emergencies.


28 Day Conservation Experience Itinerary


Day 1-5 Arrival and introduction to Kwa Madwala Private Game Reserve, including game drives, bush walks, orientation, introduction to the big 5, ranger skills, Microlight aerial flight, introduction to game ranch management.
Day 6 Conservation activities** on the reserve (see below).
Day 7 Day off - chill by the pool or head off into town
Day 8-9 Conservation activities on the reserve.
Day 10 Day trip across the border into nearby Swaziland
Day 11 Cultural Village visit located on the Swazi / South Africa border.
Day 12-13 Conservation activities on the reserve.
Day 14 Day off - chill by the pool or head off into town (Malelane) or book onto an organised excursion
Day 15-20 Community support programme - assisting with a variety of tasks at a local Aids orphanage and school.
Day 21 Day off - chill out by the pool or head off into town.
Day 22 Conservation activities working on the reserve.
Day 23-27 Mozambique camping trip. Four nights spent on the Indian Ocean coast - chill out, go fishing, snorkelling and sample the famous Mozambiquan prawn! Visa required - can be bought at the border post.
Day 28 Day off - pack up and prepare for your transfer to the airport.


Please note: the order of events as listed above may change, for a variety of reasons but that the contents will remain the same.

Kwa Madwala Conservation days consist of a variety of activities such as:



  • Game drives & bush walks, covering a variety of subjects such as tracking, bird identification, tree identification

  • Lectures and practical experience on various aspects of life on a game reserve, including management, eco-lodges, maintenance, anti-poaching, hunting policies, agricultural farming, astrology, birding

  • Interaction and assistance with the Elephant Back Safari programme - washing, watering, feeding.

  • 4x4 driving skills / shooting and gun safety, bush survival skills.

  • House chores around the lodge - cleaning, painting, maintenance, cooking, firewood collection, bush management, roads maintenance, electric fence patrol. Visit to nearby Malelane for personal shopping and internet/telephone access.


Ingwe Leopard Project: Kwa Madwala will make a donation to this regional conservation project on behalf of each conservation experience participant booked.
