This placement would suit... Flexible, hard-working volunteers who want to work with animals, while based near Cape Town in the wonderful town of Stellenbosch! Volunteers must be able to commit for three months and have a good grasp of English. You must be prepared to work shifts over weekends and irregular hours.
The Cheetah Centre is a non-profit organisation committed to the conservation of the African Cheetah and relies on public support for their education and public awareness programmes. The Cheetah Centre aims to promote the survival of the cheetah as a free-ranging species by working with five ambassador cheetahs to encourage people to gain a greater understanding of these magnificent animals.
Cheetah encounters are offered to tourists at the facility, which is also an important source of fundraising. Other ventures such as photography shoots, film productions and documentary work all increase the global awareness of the cheetahs' plight.
The daily duties of volunteers at The Cheetah Centre include greeting visitors at the facility, informing visitors about the project and about the cheetahs in general, food preparation, merchandise sales, cleaning (dishes, enclosures, shop floors, vehicles) and sometimes manual labour like fencing, carpentry, building gates, and general tasks needed for the maintenance of the cheetah enclosures.
Volunteer accommodation is in shared apartments in the historic town of Stellenbosch. This wonderful, vibrant town has plenty to do and great entertainment. With 17,000 students, over 80 restaurants and pubs and based in the center of the wine producing area, the recipe is fun, beauty and adventure!
 | At Work and Travel South Africa we are dedicated to promote partnerships between international volunteers and local conservation authorities and community organizations. Our projects benefit environmental protection agencies and contribute to the development of poorer communities around South Africa. Volunteers are able to make real connections with the local people, staff and wildlife of South Africa as they immerse themselves in the local culture and enjoy the natural splendour of the country. Volunteers return home with many new friends, a greater personal understanding of their own abilities, and an appreciation for the unique challenges and opportunities of this beautiful country. |
