This placement would suit... Do you want to help with a conservation programme that keeps dolphins in their natural habitat? Join this project to research and conserve the beautiful and exotic Tucuxi (Sotalia guianensis, a small dolphin) in its natural habitat. You’ll work on the university campus and in one of Brazil’s most beautiful bays, getting up close and personal with these amazingly intelligent mammals, recording their varied acoustic communication while on sea cruises and then analysing the data in the laboratory. Programme highlightsWorking in one of Brazil's most beautiful bays, you will have the opportunity to work with the amazing Amazon Dolphins, or Tucuxi as they are known locally, researching and studying them to aid the ongoing conservation effort. Embark on river cruises and see the jungle while providing invaluable help for a project that really appreciates volunteers. Fieldwork involves heading out on boats to observe the dolphins, take pictures, take recordings and do research. Lab work consists of cleaning and maintaining equipment, digitalising the recordings, analysing and cataloguing photos etc. Whilst in the field, you will spend up to 8 hours at a time on a cruise and up to 2 days a week recording the valuable research information. Where will I LiveRio de Janiero State Accommodation is provided at a university campus, where you will have your own private room and toilet. There are many university restaurants and cafes around as well as local stores for general needs. Qualifications and Skills The role will be varied so a flexible person is required who has an interest in wildlife and conservation and as there will be swimming and boating activity, enjoyment of boats and sea is required. You must have a positive attitude and be a fairly laid back character, as you will be living and working in a small international group so you must take responsibility for your actions. Your role is important as this dolphin species is not well known or researched and it is always a struggle to get sufficient funding for such research. Therefore all help is welcome. The project is situated around 60 kilometers away from the legendary party town of Rio de Janeiro so if you are after a fascinating cultural extravaganza where tradition and festivities collide with modern tourism, you won’t be disappointed.The surrounding countryside offers rain forests, rivers, beaches and mountains for all your adventure tourism desires. There are also many historic sites and ruins scattered around the region.
