This placement would suit... people looking to ?monkey around? with Thailand's native Gibbons at a rescue centre that aims to rehabilitate them and reintroduce them into a natural habitat.

The Gibbon Rehabilitation Centre, which borders the stunning jungle of Phetchaburi, houses groups of gibbons that are ready for rehabilitation or to go back into the wild. The centre homes many different species of Thailand’s wild animals, but a large percentage of animals that are brought to the centre are gibbons, a small ape that is native to some parts of Thailand.

The gibbon is an endangered primate and at the centre the gibbons have the chance to live on large natural islands, where they can slowly adapt to life back in the trees. On the islands, over 50 gibbons can be accommodated, a far better alternative than living in cages.

Volunteer Role

Volunteers will be working according to a daily schedule which will vary depending on the duties and number of volunteers sharing the work. Jobs may include any of the following:

  • Feeding the gibbons
  • Cleaning gibbons cages & the surrounding areas
  • Collecting gibbon food (figs and leaves) from natural resources
  • Making enrichments for the gibbons
  • Constructing newer and larger enclosures
  • Working on gibbon islands
  • Observing behaviour for rehabilitation
  • Working on education trails
  • Providing information to school children and visit

Location

The project is located in the Phetchaburi province Thailand, 170 kilometres south of Bangkok.

Accommodation and Meals

Accommodation will be on site at the centre in simple 2, 3 or 4 bedded rooms. 3 meals a day are included.
