This placement would suit... Lattitude placements suit individuals with a can-do attitude who are willing to make the most of their placement and above all enjoy it. Lattitude volunteers must be prepared to embrace the challenges that will undoubtedly face them as they care for severely disadvantaged children. As a Lattitude volunteer, you could have the highly challenging yet immensely rewarding opportunity of working with children from the shanty towns of Sao Paulo or Recife who may be orphans, addicted to drugs of victims of abuse. However, although described as caring, many centres would expect volunteers to teach English and possibly music and art as well. Teaching English is an important part of this project but equally important are the other activities you can do with the children. You can bring your particular strengths and skills to this placement, for example organizing drama classes, arts, crafts, music, playing games, etc. The placements are in projects supported by Christian churches. Volunteers can be of other faiths but cannot teach other faiths. The work will involve helping children from the neighbouring favelas with schoolwork, especially English. Children attend the project when they are not in school, so there are different groups in the morning and afternoon. The organisation also provides them with food, gives health advice and a Christian education. Few Brazilians speak English, so there is a compulsory week’s introduction to Portuguese in Sao Paulo.
