This placement would suit... caring, creative, energetic volunteers who want to make a difference. Moldova is the poorest country in Europe, struggling to improve. Although not as well publicised as the fate of orphans in Romania many of the same problems that faced children in Romania are also suffered by children in Moldova. Many families are not able to afford to look after their own children so they go into state-run orphanages. But many care workers have been left without a wage and really need the help of volunteers to care for, comfort and play with the children, giving them desperately needed love and attention. We work with a number of orphanages in and around Chisinau. Volunteers are able to help the local staff who have too much to do. There are opportunities to work with a range of ages. You can help out with young babies keeping them occupied and happy while with older children there are opportunities to play games, help with homework or even teach them some English. Bring your ideas and enthusiasm and you will make a substantial difference to their lives. If you have any preferences in terms of the work you do please let us know. We also have various placements working in disabled centres based in Chisinau. You can help by playing with the younger children and helping to teach them basic English. There are opportunities to work with a team of young and enthusiastic staff members eager to have your assistance. They arrange trips away from the centre for the children as well as camps held over the summer. Another placement keen to welcome volunteers is located in the suburbs of Chisinau to promote the integration of African children living in the city with Moldovan children. The centre, although basic, is a great place to get involved with. You could organise a football match, arrange art classes or teach basic computer skills. You will stay with a local family close to the orphanage and usually work in the mornings. As well as providing support and advice, host families also provide three meals per day which tend to be traditional recipes and give volunteers a fantastic insight into Moldovan cuisine! In your free time, you can explore the enchanting capital, Chisinau, as well as the rest of the unspoiled landscape and get to know more about the fascinating mix of Romanian and Russian, traditional, socialist and modern influences that make up Moldovan culture. Our users say..."Volunteering with TPA has been a life changing experience. I have come back with much more confidence…And yes, I would definitely recommend TPA to everyone else! Brilliant – Thanks very much." - Joanna Sidonio
