This placement would suit... anyone who wants to have a laugh, work hard, give back and go MAD! Mad projects are very varied experiences because each week you get to do a combination of building with teaching and you can travel with everyone at the weekends. The areas where we have previously done Mad projects are in Northern Thailand, partnering with NGOs to give financial and hands-on support to projects that make better facilities available for the people from Lahu and Akha hilltribe communities that live in villages in the Chiang Mai Province. The hill tribe communities were moved down from villages in the mountains to land closer to Thai towns and villages but have not been given rights as Thai citizens, that means children over 16 aren’t entitled to education and they get little or no financial assistance.A typical day will consist of a dawn song from cockerels to wake you from your bed, omelette, pak choi and chilli for breakfast, getting clean by washing using a bucket shower and then getting very dirty mixing cement, carrying buckets of stones and painting walls on the building project. If you decide that you’d like to teach you will be responsible for devising lesson plans to give the children knowledge about subjects that are on their syllabus e.g. time, colours, the alphabet, greetings etc. There may be some occasions where you won’t be expected to teach or build and the NGO want volunteers to be good role models for the children and try to learn to speak some of the local dialect, or how to weave with bamboo and help to make the food at mealtimes. The houses are made from bamboo and are raised above the ground by bamboo legs! At the weekend you can go on treks up the nearby mountains, bathe in the waterfalls, ride on the back of an elephant rides, visit the local towns or journey to the famous Golden Triangle. And after the project, Thailand is a wonderful country that many visitors will travel to every year for the very well known ‘full-moon’ celebrations, delightful food, spectacular markets and beautiful stretches of sand and gorgeous see-through seas.Support: Each project has trained crew to guide you in the field. Each crew member has a great passion for, and knowledge of the community you will be visiting. Adventures: Follow your project with a group adventure.
