This placement would suit... those wanting to support a local community and improve the way of life for the inhabitants.![]() Changing Worlds has formed a partnership with the UK registered charity Azafady that now allows us to offer unique and challenging placements in Madagascar - a vibrant country of beautiful scenery, exotic animals and welcoming people. If you are looking for a road less travelled while helping to improve the lives of forgotten people, then Azafady's Pioneer volunteer programme is for you! The programme covers a wide range of activities including fighting poverty through sustainable income generating projects, conservation initiatives and basic health care and health education. What will I do?:When you join the Pioneer Programme, you will spend ten weeks in Madagascar living and working with local communities in one of the most beautiful and remote regions on earth. Alongside a team of like-minded volunteers led by highly qualified staff, you will play an active part in Azafady’s health, education and sustainable livelihood projects. In collaboration with village communities, you will be involved in a wide range of projects which could include building wells and pharmacies, monitoring lemur and bird species, raising awareness of hygiene and health issues, studying endemic plants of the precious remaining forests and promoting income-generating projects. You will receive an all-round experience in the workings of a small development agency, an excellent background for anyone wanting to pursue a career in development or conservation. It is Azafady’s belief and experience from 10 years of working in Madagascar that improving the lives of local people cannot be achieved through imposition. It can only be achieved through an integrated, holistic and participatory approach, working with local people from the first step of every project until the last. Azafady focuses on projects which deliver sustainable benefits to the poorest members of the community where help is needed most. Accommodation:Camping facilities are provided for volunteers throughout their stay although everyone must provide their own tent! Facilities are basic, especially when working in rural areas, and volunteers should be prepared for physical work, adventurous road journeys and long hikes to reach remote and beautiful project sites. Safe drinking water is available at every site. The work and lifestyle is challenging but incomparably rewarding. Azafady Pioneers work in areas where few tourists ever visit and weekends are free to explore the lush forests, swim and surf at the stunning beaches and enjoy singing and dancing with local people. Freetime:You can expect to work some weekends so free time will always be at a premium. However, in your time off there is plenty to explore in the region - the unique wildlife and habitats of Madagascar will be of great interest. Night safaris are a lot of fun! Or you could simply enjoy relaxing and surfing on the stunning beaches around Fort Dauphin. Further a field, the beautiful coral reefs that surround the island are ideal for snorkelling and diving.
