This placement would suit... anyone aged 17-24 with a thirst for team-based adventure and volunteering projects off the beaten track. You’ll make an important contribution to the remote communities of this remarkable country and have a memorable and rewarding experience of how the locals work and live.

Raleigh International is a charity that provides adventure and challenge expeditions for people from all backgrounds, nationalities and ages, especially young people.

The community phase of our expedition in Malaysia offers first hand experience of how communities in the Borneon state of Sabah live. As well as contributing to education or water projects, you will have the opportunity to organise community activities such as a sports day for the village and may be invited into the local’s houses. Full training as part of an in-country induction is provided on arrival.

Whether part of your summer vacation, career break or gap year, Raleigh’s four week programme is a worthwhile and unforgettable experience.

A taste of what’s ahead on the four week expedition
Access to clean water and adequate schooling are two of the biggest challenges facing Sabah’s remotest communities today. This year Raleigh is helping to improve school and community facilities in cut off, subsistence farming villages with poor communications to the outside world. You could be living with, and working alongside, villagers in Sabah’s long house communities, gaining a unique insight into the lives of the indigenous people and establishing life long friendships whilst making a lasting contribution to the village. Building schools and water systems, you will significantly improve the health and daily lives of the villagers.

A few words from an ex-venturer
Charlotte Perrett talks about her time on expedition in Malaysia: "Learning about Sabah has been a real thrill, seeing the culture and traditions in action and really being in the varied surroundings in a way most tourists don’t get to, from the total isolation of Imbak to staying on the gorgeous Mamutick island."

Raleigh InternationalMore time to spare?
If you have longer than four weeks, why not participate in Raleigh’s full 10 week programme and experience the full rewards of our unique three phase programme of community, environmental and adventure projects. As well as Malaysia, Raleigh runs five and 10 week programmes in Costa Rica and Nicaragua and India. Seven week programmes are also available, so you can join any two phases of the full programme. Please see separate listings.

And here’s a taste of our adventure and environment phases in Malaysia if you choose to do a seven or 10 week expedition:

Adventure: A unique three phase challenge - from the demands of trail blazing in the Crocker Range National Park to an exhilarating climb up Mount Kinabalu and a SCUBA diving conservation programme in Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park, assisting the Sabah Park’s Marine Research Unit with the international Reef Check project.

Raleigh InternationalEnvironment: With the rich biodiversity and abundant wildlife of its rainforests, Sabah offers ample opportunities to help preserve the local habitat or make it more accessible working alongside resident scientists and rangers. You could take part in research projects around the highly protected and world renowned Danum Valley, contribute to preparatory work for a hanging suspension bridge or build a trail for scientists in Imbak Canyon to help preserve its pristine virgin jungle.
