This placement would suit... volunteers who love working with children and believe in the long term goals of the project. You will need to show initiative and enthusiasm in order to really engage with the class. To give you a head-start with teaching English you will be trained before you go on your project through i-to-i's International 40-hour on-line TEFL programme (Teaching English as a Foreign Language). This course is included in the cost of this venture. Remember that the children may come from difficult backgrounds and you will need to show patience and understanding and be able to act as role model. Skills in any extra curricular activities will be welcomed at this project, particularly art, music and sports. From the Indian Ocean coast to the dramatic highlands and the unique safaris the only thing more welcoming than the landscape are the people! Volunteering in Kenya offers volunteers the chance to see this diverse and beautiful continent and make a difference to the lives of the people you meet on your journey.Situated between Malindi and Mombasa you will find Kilifi, a picturesque coastal town straddling Kilifi Creek. The relatively unspoilt Bofa Beach, hailed as one of the best beaches in Kenya, is just one of the attractions of the area and watersport fans will find plenty to keep them occupied with snorkelling and scuba trips along the coral reef and water-skiing on Kilifi Creek. The nearby Mnarani ruins, with Mosques and tombs from the 14th -17th century, are also worth a visit. You will be based just 5km away from Kilifi town in a small village where your work with orphans and other children in need will help them to build a brighter future. Project details: In Kilifi i-to-i work with a community-based organization which was founded in 2003 to help orphans and children from poor families. The aim of the centre is to care for orphans and other children in need, providing mental and physical support whilst creating and building social links between the children and their families and other social groups. Not only does the centre provide accommodation for the children, it also provides education at a school which has been especially constructed for them. Why the project needs volunteers: The projects needs volunteers as it is understaffed and therefore doesn't have the adequate resources to teach and care for the children. Volunteers are also welcomed for the exchange of ideas, interaction and exposure to new cultures that they bring. Your role as a volunteer: As a volunteer at this project your main role will be to assist with teaching and looking after the children. You will play with the children and teach them English and other subjects in addition to helping around the centre with tasks such as cleaning, cooking and serving food. Where the project is based: The project is located in a village 5km (15 minutes drive) away from Kilifi town, which is the main town in the area. You will be staying in a shared house at the project, adjacent to the children's dormitory and project co-ordinator's house. The project is 1.5 hour's drive away from Mombasa. Please book your flight to arrive into Mombasa (airport code MBA) on the advertised arrival date to ensure your airport pickup.
