Despite the boom in mass tourism that has enveloped areas such as Phuket and Koh Samui, it is still possible to experience the ‘real’ Thailand. If you have a passion to brighten the lives of disadvantaged children in Thailand and would love to have your efforts rewarded by some of the most amazing smiles in the world, then you have found your perfect match. Your help is desperately needed at the shelter for hill tribe children. You will be working with children from the mountain tribes on the border with Burma and Laos. You will be lending a helping hand and warm heart to these impoverished youngsters by assisting with a diverse range of activities from general day to day care and cleaning to games and arts and crafts. By bringing with you plenty of patience, energy, creativity, imagination and initiative you and the children will then thrive in this challenging environment.Project details: We are working with a number of homes or shelters for children in Northern Thailand. The children come from a range of disadvantaged backgrounds ranging from Burmese children whose families have to work leaving their children in the centre`s care to be looked after, to children from the minority mountain tribes who have been abandoned by their parents and are in danger of being exposed to child labour and the sex trade. Why the project needs volunteers: This project requires our volunteers help to look after the well being of the children. Activities may include general daily activities including taking care of the infants, teaching conversational English and cooking for the children and other activities such as building a shelter and looking after street children. You may also be required to teach English and socialise with Burmese women and help with vocational skills so that they become more independent. Your role as a volunteer: At this placement you will play a valuable role in looking after the children in general daily activities and also teaching communication and life skills. Where the project is based: This project is based in Mae Sai close to Chiang Rai in northern Thailand. You will have an orientation in Bangkok before travelling via overnight bus to the project. Please book your flight to arrive into Bangkok (airport code BKK) on the advertised arrival date to ensure your airport pickup. "Just a quick note to say it’s a weird and wonderful world up here, very different from anything I've done or seen but am enjoying myself and having a great experience" Zoë: Community work with hill tribe children in Northern Thailand
