This placement would suit... anyone looking for a building project. Help underprivileged families out of their shacks and into solid and safer houses. Handing over the keys is the ultimate rewarding experience. This project works in the poorest areas of Guatemala to rebuild homes and to supply health and education to some of the most disadvantaged families. This is without a doubt one of our most rewarding volunteer projects. As a volunteer is Guatemala not only do you help change peoples lives forever you see in a relatively short time the huge positive impact that your work has on the families and communities you are working alongside. Many Guatemalan families live in poor quality makeshift homes that are built of nothing more than cardboard or sugar cane walls with dirt floors. The use of makeshift building materials and poor construction resulting from a lack of resources leaves families extremely vulnerable to the harsh weather conditions during the storm season. Poor quality, dilapidated housing fuels health problems, and destroys family unity and hope. Working with this project gives you the opportunity to help directly with some of the world's poorest families to build or rebuild houses making them strong, safe, culturally appropriate, and affordable to maintain. These homes become the foundation for a community building process. Volunteer RoleChanging lives block by blockEach house takes around 6 days to be built from start to finish which allows volunteers to see completion of a project and (most rewarding) the final results, a very happy and very grateful family whose lives you have helped change beyond all expectations. The GoalOnce the house is completed the family can move their belongings into their new home and are handed the keys. This is always a very emotional time for both families and volunteers alike and an extremely rewarding moment that you’ll never forget. Project LocationThe project is based in the surrounding countryside of the colonial town of Antigua just 40 minutes from the Capital Guatemala City. Volunteers will go out each day with the project staff to the site where a new house is being built in the surrounding villages, this can be anywhere from 10 to 40 minutes from Antigua. AccommodationMost participants live with one of our typical Guatemalan families. All families are close friends of the onsite staff and will speak Spanish most of the time (to help you get the most from your time in Guatemala) although some family members do speak some English. Spanish tuitionSpanish tuition can be easily combined with this volunteer programme, see prices below.
