We can offer you the chance to work on game and nature reserves alongside conservationists, zoologists, wildlife vets and reserve managers. We welcome volunteers from all backgrounds, with no previous experience necessary, from the age of 17 upwards. Placements are from one to three months, and you can combine two or more projects in one trip. The Dolphin and Whale Research Centre African Conservation Experience offers you the chance to take part in whale and dolphin research projects in South Africa. The Dolphin and Whale Research Centre (DWRC) is based in the spectacular Plettenberg Bay, which is fast becoming the 'whale and dolphin capital of the Garden Route' in South Africa, and the breeding ground for dolphins and whales. The primary mission of the DWRC is to gather information on all marine mammal, and particularly dolphin, species inhabiting the Western Indian Ocean. Secondly, to co-ordinate and integrate multidisciplinary research on the behaviour, ecology, taxonomy, anatomy, physiology, toxicology, parasitology, conservation and management of these marine mammals. Through a network of scientists and post-graduate students, the more than 30 research programmes undertaken by the DWRC have contributed in excess of 145 publications to the scientific and popular literature. The student programme Students assist on projects to research the populations, behaviour and familial relationships of dolphins, whales and seals, and the effectiveness of marine reserves. Students share accommodation in a double storey timber chalet on a picturesque property, provided with electricity, and hot and cold running water.
