QUEST gap years in Latin America are three months long combining a three-week language phase, four-week project volunteering and a six-week adventure expedition phase; the perfect end to your gap year abroad. You'll take a fully instructed surf course, journey down the largely undiscovered north-eastern coastline, sleep in hammocks under the stars, trek in valleys and ridges, go wildlife spotting, be awestruck by the thundering Iguazu Falls and party the night away in Rio de Janeiro! Language PhaseLocated in the heart of the Ipanema district of Rio, you and your team are perfectly situated for Portuguese lessons in the morning and play in the afternoon. With the beaches and beautiful people of Rio on your doorstep you'll have a chance to practice your speaking skills with the friendly locals and gain a true feel for the Brazilian way of life. Project Phase![]() Help us to protect the threatened Brazilian Amazon, by creating a sustainable eco-village for the communities that live there. This is an utterly unique experience taking you into the depths of the jungle. Set on the edge of virgin Amazon Rainforest, you will be helping to develop ways to work in harmony with the natural environment, so as to have less of a negative impact on the stunning surrounding rainforest. Within the reserve your help is required to build a much needed infrastructure, to meet local basic needs, such as education, healthcare and the provision of livelihoods, to assure the survival of this unique eco-system and the people who make it their home. Expedition PhaseThe adventure begins! You'll spend 6 weeks travelling along the golden coast of Brazil and down towards Rio. You'll trek to the 2nd highest waterfall in South America, learn to surf on a 4 day instructed course, go white-water rafting, visit environmental protected zones teeming with wildlife, go river tubing and enjoy colonial cities. In Rio you'll spend a week taking in all this wonderful city has to offer, from the world famous Maracana football stadium to sugar loaf mountain and the Christ the Redeemer Statue looking out over Rio. You'll go hand gliding, dance the Samba and enjoy Rio's golden beaches. A spectacular journey through South America's most varied and friendly country. Pre-departure preparation Everyone is invited to join in training weekend prior to departure. The weekend is included in the cost of your expedition, topics covered include kit and packing, cultural awareness, responsible tourism, risk assessments, cooking, health, and provides an opportunity to meet your leaders and the rest of your team before you go overseas. The weekends are held in London and it is strongly recommended that all team members come along, as they not only provide a vital part of your preparation but are great fun as well.
