Why do you need travel insurance?

Travel insurance is something that you MUST take with you. Not sure how it works? No problem - essentially you pay a small amount to a company to cover you on your trip and if something goes wrong that requires a big payout (e.g. £6,000 for hospital treatment, £18,000 for an air ambulance etc) - then your insurance company pays, not you.

Gapyear.com's Tom Griffiths says...

Tom Griffiths"People buy insurance like they buy bread...'It looks right, nab the cheapest, off I go'. However, you’d never go into a supermarket and choose the cheapest ready-filled trolley of shopping available would you? That's because you want to choose the stuff you need right? Insurance is the same.

Do not choose a package that just looks right. Work out what you need and choose a package that IS right. Why spend more on 'medical' and 'Personal liability' than you need? Why pay for baggage and travel delay if you're never going to claim? It may save you over £50 on policies over 6 months long! This section helps you find out what you need, what you don't and where you can get it from. So there's no excuse to travel uninsured. None whatsoever" - Tom Griffiths, founder.

Some real examples of costs (we can’t use their names)

- £3,000
Girl slipped off a curb in Barcelona and broke her leg

- £9,000
Lad fell off a donkey (also in Spain) broke his thigh

- £30,000
Girl fell off a balcony in Turkey and nearly died. £30,000 to save her life...

- £50,000
A backpacker fell ill on mountain in Nepal (air ambulance + medical fees cost a fortune!)

- £150,000
Backpacker dived into shallow water on Bondi Beach on Christmas Day and broke his neck

* Only the lad who fell off the donkey had insurance.

The rest had to find the money to pay. travel insurance isn’t just for covering you for sky diving and adventure sports, it’s for everyday accidents like above that could happen to you.

What would you do (seriously) if you were faced with a £50,000 medical bill? Would you let your parents sell their home to raise the cash? You might have to...

Yes, these are deliberate scare tactics as this subject is so important, especially if you are heading off around the world. Air ambulances normally cost over £10,000 just to take off. A medical team flying you back from Australia...?
