This placement would suit... Anyone keen to experience the real Africa! We live in a remote community surrounded by wildlife. Be prepared to learn a lot about wildlife and to live in basic conditions. This is one of the phrases that you'll learn in response to Kaya-reh? (how are you?) during the first week of your African adventure. A Maasai warrior from the village, will spend the first week teaching you some basic Maasai and introducing you to their fascinating and historic culture. From Arusha we head deep into the African bush to the Maasai village in the 'Mini Seregeti'. Here you will be given a formal welcome ceremony hosted by the village chief. No sooner will you be settled into your traditional 'boma' than you will start carrying out the wildlife surveys Greenforce is doing in this area for the AWF. The Maasai Moran or Warriors will teach you how to track animals, so you will soon become an expert in spotting the difference between a spotted hyena and a blue duiker! In the evenings you will be teaching English to small groups of the Maasai. Classes are informal, but the Maasai are eager to learn and will take any opportunity to practice their English with you. You will also be encouraged by them to use as much Maasai as you can muster, so be prepared to brave a new and exciting language! The wildlife is all around our camp (you might wake up to find lion prints outside the village fence), but midway through your phase you will pile aboard the Land Rovers for the mid phase break, when you with either go on an overnight camel safari, visit Lake Natron or go out tracking with the Wa-Hazabe bushmen. You may (seasonal) also do a night climb of the Maasai Mountain of the Gods to see the sun rise beneath you over the waking African landscape.Zanzibar - the exotic Spice Islands in the Indian Ocean As you bid farewell to the village you next head to Zanzibar, the Spice Islands, where you can see for yourself how the exotic Arabic influence has made Zanzibar a truly unique part of Africa. After a night in Stone Town, you will travel to the north of the island to the amazing marine park, for three days of sailing, snorkelling, beach and barbeques. Extension options 1) Mount Kilimanjaro: A one-week extension is available at the beginning or end of an expedition to climb the Marangu Route of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest mountain. You can extend your stay on Zanzibar by one week to complete your PADI Open Water qualification. (Approx £460, also includes accommodation and three meals a day).
