This placement would suit... If you want an intimate exposure to ‘real’ Guyana a combination placement is the way forward as it reveals the many different faces of this fascinating country. It provides diverse challenges in contrasting environments giving a unique experience. Explore by canoe deep into the Amazon jungle places hardly seen before. Experience traditional Amerindian ways of life, teach local kids, create walkways through the rainforest canopy and run an authentic jungle lodge.A rainforest, mountain and river experience The placement is split between three different locations in the Amazon Jungle at the foot of the Pakaraima Mountains: Rock View Lodge, Surama Village and the Iwokrama Canopy Walkway. Rock View Lodge is a traditional ranch where you will ride out with local cowboys and help look after their guests. They still harvest cashew nuts and make handicrafts in the traditional manner. It is on the main route between Georgetown, the capital, and Brazil so you will get an interesting mix of visitors to socialise with. Next you will venture by canoe to live deeper in the Amazon Jungle amongst the Amerindian community where there is a jungle walkway allowing you to see above the tree canopy to spot exotic birds, wildlife, and hopefully the elusive jaguar. Here you will help with jungle conservation initiatives and will need to be up for a challenge as you will sleep in hammocks! Lastly up to Surama, a wonderfully vibrant village on the edge of the jungle. This community is virtually unchanged by the modern world, giving you a special insight into the traditions of old.
