This placement would suit... Keen swimmers who would like to share their skills and enthusiasm with South Africa's underprivileged children. Being a swimming coach really can change lives. Many developing countries have high numbers of people who cannot swim. This leads to regular drownings that can be easily avoided through teaching children basic swim techniques.Swimming in South Africa tells a tale of two sides. The first sees the country as a powerful and successful nation, claiming victory and world records throughout Africa and on the international circuit. The other side of the sport tells a different story. Over 70% of the nation has little or no swimming ability and 1000s of drownings occur each year. The government subsidise swimming lessons for township schools so the pupils can receive lessons at local pools. However, there is still a lack of swim instructors and general assistants to help supervise the sessions. Therefore, whether you have recognised qualifications, or simply enjoy swimming and interacting with kids, there is a place for you.Whether you end up coaching provincial swimmers or teaching newcomers to the pool, not only will you make an important impact to sports development, you will equip children with skills that could end up saving their lives. A Life Guard Award course can be taken with the Swimming coaching placement at no additional cost. The course runs for two weeks and includes 40 hours of practical training with elements covering first aid and CPR, how to perform a save and how to spot an incident.
