A diving gap year means being part of a world many only dream of - and being paid to be there. The recreational dive industry continues to grow thanks to the huge interest in the marine world. The growth of eco-tourism also means many of the locations involved are quite simply the best the world has to offer. Lord Howe Island and the Great Barrier Reef, for example, are both regular locations for our graduates in their first jobs as dive professionals.

An eight week course can take you from your first qualification to divemaster level, which is a good foundation for a career in the industry. As a divemaster you would be managing dives for a school and working closely with their instructors while you build your own experience underwater.

Course content

The Divemaster Traineeship takes you from absolute beginner right up to PADI Divemaster, the basic qualification for professional work in the recreational dive industry. If you are already qualified as an entry-level diver at the beginning of the programme, we give you the choice of logging some extra dives or recapping your PADI Open Water Diver course.

Flying FishYou spend your first six weeks at Sydney's Pro Dive Academy, staying at Manly near one of Sydney's most spectacular beaches. After qualifying as a Divemaster we fly you to Queensland for a week based at Cairns, diving on the Great Barrier Reef. Airfare is included. Here you enjoy a three-day Live aboard, logging dives and discovering the wonders of the tropical Barrier Reef.

Finally you return to Sydney for a week of work experience, to take your first steps as a dive professional wearing the Pro Dive uniform.

The programme includes a wide range of PADI distinctive specialty courses to give you the breadth of experience you need to be a useful employee. Once qualified, take advantage of our free careers advice and job placement service to find dive jobs worldwide.

Flying Fish18 year old Nick Jones from Barnet was keen to make the most of his Gap Year. He wanted to get qualified as a Divemaster and spend some time in Australia, so the 'Flying Fish set-up plus the location was perfect for my plans.'

'Diving in Sydney was fascinating. The conditions are completely unlike those a bit further up the coast with really interesting stuff - great wreck dives and some marine life quite different to anything I’ve seen before. Diving in the Harbour was fantastic, what a great setting! Lots of grey nurse sharks and of course, the very rare Weedy Sea Dragon.'

Nick was also a big fan of ‘Fish’ life in Manly. 'Living in Manly was great, the perfect position, a couple of minutes walk from the beach, great atmosphere, good nightlife and first class accommodation. Access to Sydney by ferry was quick, easy and cheap so we made regular trips to Circular Quay. There are so many opportunities there to do loads of water sports - surfing, sailing, diving, and windsurfing.

Once I qualified, I stuck around and helped Pro Dive for a while which meant I got lots of dives for free for helping out. I then went up to Cairns and worked with Mike Ball Dive expeditions on a voluntary basis which Pro Dive helped set up for me. Throughout the course you make some great contacts - if you want work.

I then bought a van with two other guys who had been on Fish courses and we drove from Cape Tribulation to Sydney, thought Port Douglas, Fraser Island, Surfer’s Paradise and Byron Bay. What a great trip and a fantastic end to my gap year.'

Nick is now back in the UK at Southampton University studying marine biology and oceanography.

'A year goes quickly, as does your money, so do your research before you go to make sure you get as much out of it as you can. Enjoy it.'
