Budding cowboys/girls who want a true experience of the Australian outback and the rainforests at Cape Tribulation If you hanker for the great outdoors and have always dreamt of being a fully fledged jackaroo (or jillaroo for that matter), working on a traditional cattle station and getting stuck into local conservation projects in beautiful North Queensland, then look no
further. Split your time between helping out at a typical Australian farm or an outback cattle station, working with the horses, livestock and participating in off farm activities such as rural shows, rodeos and camp drafting. The other part of your time will be spent on the conservation project at the Tropical Wildlife Centre near Cape Tribulation. The area is stunningly beautiful with many species of exotic birds and mammals that need protecting. You are not far from the coast where you can enjoy surfing, sailing and swimming off the magnificent beaches, explore Fraser and Whitsunday Islands or scuba dive over the famous Great Barrier Reef. Outline Itinerary: Fly into Brisbane Airport where you'll be met and taken to the glorious Rainbow Beach for 3 nights to recover from the journey and sleep off the jet lag! From here you'll be able to visit Fraser Island and get stuck into canoeing, sailing, swimming, surfing, swimming withthe dolphins, cycling, skydiving, diving, rain forest walking, and much more. On the fourth day you'll be taken to the cattle station which is a day's journey so bring a good book.At the station you'll be given a thorough briefing and induction about the station, jobs to be done, safety precautions etc before getting stuck into your jobs. Doing What? As a jack or jillaroo you’ll be working with the horses, livestock and participating in off farm activities such as rural shows, rodeos and camp drafting. Join in with everything happening on the property - mustering cattle on horseback or with motorbikes then sorting, injecting, ear tagging, even castrating the cattle! Help the owners fix kangaroo damage by checking fences, tightening slack wires, putting in new fence posts. As sweet as the old "roo’s" are they cause many a sleepless night! Second half working at the conservation project at the Tropical Wildlife Centre. The area is stunningly beautiful with over 204 species of birds over 20 mammal species - reptiles, frogs, birds, fish and mammals in abundance. Doing What? Help introduce crocodiles back into the area.Help map and monitor the resident wildlife. NB the 10 week program includes a three-day sailing trip around the Whitsunday Islands! - an experience not to be missed. This placement has the added advantage of being able to help you find paid work after you've finished to fund further travel.
