This placement would suit... Someone with a keen interest in bears who is prepared to roll up their sleeves and help out with all sorts of tasks at this brand new sanctuary. Oyster can arrange for you to volunteer at a newly-opened bear sanctuary near picturesque Brasov. It’s a great chance to get close to these beautiful creatures and be involved in something really positive. You’ll be helping rehabilitate brown bears who have been kept in appalling conditions and will be able to watch their progress as they get used to life in the wild. What will I do? The World Society for the Protection of Animals has helped set up this new sanctuary to provide a home for brown bears released from captivity. Most of these bears will have been captured as cubs and kept in cruel conditions as a visitor attraction or for fights. They will need careful and controlled introduction into the wild. Those who can’t fend for themselves will be able to enjoy the protected open spaces of the sanctuary. As a volunteer you’ll be helping with a wide range of tasks, including feeding the bears, monitoring their progress, helping at the ‘bear hospital’, maintaining fences and facilities and showing visitors around. Where will I live? You will be based in Brasov, living in a warm and comfortable flat that Oyster will rent for you and our other volunteers. Please expect to share a room. You can go out in the evening to one of the many restaurants, or cook for yourself. Oyster will arrange transport to the sanctuary each day. How can I spend my free time? You’ll have the advantage of working in the peace of the forest, but living and socialising in a vibrant and picturesque city. Brasov has a lovely square, fine historical buildings and lively nightlife. There is plenty to do, both in the city and the surrounding countryside (Count Dracula’s castle and a skiing area are close by). Our volunteers have really enjoyed exploring this relatively unknown part of Europe and you will too - especially if you love forests, mountains and medieval towns. Oyster Worldwide Support Our friendly UK team will be there to help you up to your departure, making sure that all the arrangements are in place. Shortly before you leave we’ll hold a pre-departure course where you’ll meet fellow volunteers and get thorough preparation to help you with working and living in Romania. You will be met at Bucharest airport by Oyster’s local representative and driven up to Brasov to settle into your accommodation. The role of the representative is to act as a source of advice and support when you need it. During the first couple of days he will show you around and provide a useful induction course. Once you start work he will keep in contact and organise various socials. He will also keep us updated on your health and welfare.
