This placement would suit... someone who wants to work in a professional gymnastics environment with good facilities where they will have the opportunity to not only coach gymnastics but to compete as well. You'll work in a very professional gymnastics environment, coaching a variety of gymnastics events to children ranging from beginners through to international level.Gymnastics is a fairly popular sport in Australia and participation is growing each year. On this project you'll work at one of the top gymnastics clubs in Western Australia. Your role will be as an assistant coach in a number of gymnastics events, coaching the juniors at the club. The club has excellent facilities, and a number of different activities that you will have the opportunity to get involved in. These range from cheerleading, rings, trampoline, pommel bars to teaching three year olds the basic motor skills involved with gymnastics. You'll work as a coach at a gymnastics club in the city of Perth. The gymnastics clubs that we work with have a variety of ages that attend and you will be working with children across the different age groups. You'll assist the head coaches for each particular event. This will give you good experience and a good insight into a variety of gymnastics events. On this project you will be able to improve your coaching skills and learn from the highly qualified and experienced coaches at the clubs. Some of the coaches at the club are the Australian national coaches for their respective gymnastics events, so you'll take away some good coaching memories from this placement! No qualifications are required for this project but you will need to be experienced in gymnastics and have competed at some point. You'll work with a variety of age groups and with children at different levels of ability, from beginners through to national gym level. There may also be the opportunity to work with a number of school groups that use the gymnastics club. The clubs have a variety of different gymnastics events, including:
You'll work from Monday to Friday with some optional coaching on the weekend. As this project is very flexible, you may wish to coach on the weekend instead and have 2 days off in the week and arrangements to do this will take place between you and the head coach while on your placement. However, you'll have to take into account that certain events take place on different days. A typical day on this project is as follows:
If you wish to compete in gymnastics competitions, they do run all year round, but the main season is from May to September. AccommodationYour accommodation is located in the CBD (Central Business District) of Perth, Western Australia. Therefore you are very central, close to the main train station and shopping district. You'll be accommodated in a centrally located lodge that is friendly and relaxing, making it ideal for long-term stays. You may have your own room or you may share a room with other volunteers. There is an excellent kitchen and storage area for cooking meals and plenty of space to relax. Entertainment at your accommodation includes a pool table, cheap internet access, arcade machines and cable TV (Foxtel), to name a few. But with all the sunshine Perth has, you’ll be out and about enjoying the many outdoor activities! You are literally a stroll from the Swan River and free CBD transport. Trains and buses are also only a few minutes away to take you to Fremantle, King’s Park or to the many other ‘things to do’! The city centre boasts great shopping, restaurants and pubs or head over to Northbridge for more pubs, nightclubs and multicultural cuisine. You'll get to work via bus, which stops outside your accommodation. Perth was built on the banks of the magnificent Swan River over 150 years ago and is now a city rich in culture and filled with theatres, art galleries and museums. The city is modern and vibrant - a fun, friendly and 'laid back' place, with clear skies and a sunny climate. Western Australia is locally known as the 'state of excitement!' Some of its more famous attractions include Kings Park, Scarborough Beach, Fremantle and the Swan River. Fremantle (or as the local’s call it, ‘Freo’) is the city’s port and is rich in history. At weekends you will find markets, entertainment and plenty of alfresco style cafes to laze in. Perth has restaurants to suit all tastes, but the most popular cuisine is, of course, the great Australian BBQ. Barbeque facilities are abundant in local parks - take your own food and cook up a feast, Australian style! For meals in local restaurants, a trip to Perth's inner city centre is well worth the effort - it bustles with activity and offers a range of choices of restaurants.
