This placement would suit... someone who wants to work in a professional hockey environment with good facilities where they will have the opportunity to not only coach hockey but to play as well.

Hockey is a national sport that is widely played in Australia. You'll coach juniors at a club with excellent facilities. You can also train and play for one of the senior male or female teams.

Hockey is a popular sport in Australia. The country is consistently ranked as one of the best for hockey in the world.

On this project, you'll spend your afternoons and evenings coaching various junior teams at a hockey club.

You'll also train with various adult teams at the club and, if you get selected, you will be able to play in matches over the weekends.

All the clubs we work with have a very lively social scene and you'll be welcomed with open arms!

As the hockey project will only take up a certain amount of time during the week and will be based during the evenings, in the day time you will be working on the Refugee Sports Project where you'll work for 4-5 hours a day coaching a number of other sports. This will leave your evenings free to coach and train with the hockey club.

The club where you'll work is conveniently located close to your accommodation. There are many boys' and girls' junior teams that you will coach, and you'll also have the opportunity to coach, train and possibly play for (if you get selected) a number of senior men's and women's teams.

The junior girls and boys teams are as follows:
  • Under 4s & Under 5s (minkey hockey)
  • Under 6s - Under 9s (mixed teams)
  • Under 9s - Under 17s (boys and girls teams)
If you'd also like to play hockey while on your project, this can be arranged and you may also have the opportunity to coach one of the teams, if you're good enough to do so. The senior teams that you can coach, train with and play for are:
  • Men’s: Seniors & Veterans
  • Women’s: Seniors & Veterans
Please Note: This project runs all year around apart from the school holidays when there will not be a chance to coach.

During the period of October - January you can play hockey socially but you won't be able to coach.

Travellers WorldwideAccommodation
Your accommodation is located in the CBD (Central Business District) of Perth, Western Australia. Therefore you are very central, close to the main train station and shopping district.

You'll be accommodated in a centrally located lodge that is friendly and relaxing, making it ideal for long-term stays. You may have your own room or you may share a room with other volunteers. There is an excellent kitchen and storage area for cooking meals and plenty of space to relax.

Entertainment at your accommodation includes a pool table, cheap internet access, arcade machines and cable TV (Foxtel), to name a few. But with all the sunshine Perth has, you’ll be out and about enjoying the many outdoor activities! You are literally a stroll from the Swan River and free CBD transport. Trains and buses are also only a few minutes away to take you to Fremantle, King’s Park or to the many other ‘things to do’! The city centre boasts great shopping, restaurants and pubs or head over to Northbridge for more pubs, nightclubs and multicultural cuisine. You'll get to work via bus, which stops outside your accommodation.

Perth was built on the banks of the magnificent Swan River over 150 years ago and is now a city rich in culture and filled with theatres, art galleries and museums. The city is modern and vibrant - a fun, friendly and 'laid back' place, with clear skies and a sunny climate. Western Australia is locally known as the 'state of excitement!'

Some of its more famous attractions include Kings Park, Scarborough Beach, Fremantle and the Swan River. Fremantle (or as the local’s call it, ‘Freo’) is the city’s port and is rich in history. At weekends you will find markets, entertainment and plenty of alfresco style cafes to laze in.

Perth has restaurants to suit all tastes, but the most popular cuisine is, of course, the great Australian BBQ. Barbeque facilities are abundant in local parks - take your own food and cook up a feast, Australian style!

For meals in local restaurants, a trip to Perth's inner city centre is well worth the effort - it bustles with activity and offers a range of choices of restaurants.
