This placement would suit... individuals who love the great open sea, who would relish the chance to be involved with dolphins whilst getting stuck into life changing community projects.

Always dreamt of swimming with dolphins in the crystal clear waters of the Indian Ocean? Why not combine the experience of beach life on one of the world’s most stunning, palm fringed coastlines with helping marine conservation efforts and teaching African kids at a local school.

Join a team of volunteers on this totally unique placement. Live in a laid back lodge on the beautiful white sands and turquoise waters of Kenya’s famous Indian Ocean coast, the playground of East Africa whilst making a valued contribution to local communities and their environment.

Feel the thrill of tracking pods of dolphins and rare whale sharks and helping to conserve their coral habitat, sailing out daily with a team of experts on traditional wooden dhow boats. Add to this a rewarding project teaching English, art and sports to underprivileged children for a combination of volunteer experiences that immerses you in every aspect of coastal life. Grasp the chance to witness Africa’s world-renowned marine life, its spectacular reefs and Kenya’s diverse tribes, each with their own interesting traditions and cultures.

Helping Who?
  • Local primary school children in the villages at Shimoni
  • Kenya Kesho charity
  • The dolphins and whale sharks
Helping How?

The LeapLeap 1 Conservation
Help on the dolphin and whale shark projects plus forestry research.

Each day the boat will go out with a professional crew where you will search for dolphins and record where they have been spotted. You will get to know the dolphins by their markings and scars. We hope that by the end of your time you will be able to know when they surface to play, when they are feeding and when they are generally annoyed! If the dolphins and whale sharks are receptive and not out in the deep ocean, swimming with them is a possibility.

Help The Kenya Wildlife Service with their beach cleaning and rubbish sorting projects. Help identify and log the various trees, shrubs and plants on Wasini Island.

Leap 2 Community
Teaching/School Improvement
Teach English and sport to the local children at the Pongwe and Kidimu Schools. Of the 7400 children in the 10 local primary schools less than 50 pass their Kenya Certificate of Primary Education and of those only 12 go onto secondary education. With your help a lot more will reach secondary school.

Assistance may be required to help with the construction and improvement of fresh water systems in the local villages and you can help teach basic hygiene awareness, as well as redecorating schools and the Deaf Unit.
