Experience a true African adventure by joining a team of intrepid gappers on a placement that offers a taste of life in the bush, Mt Kilimanjaro and the fabulous Indian Ocean whilst getting stuck into worthwhile conservation, eco-tourism and community projects in each.
Tanzania is home to some of the best known game parks in the world such as the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater, where you can regularly see Africa’s ‘big five’ - elephant, lion, leopard, rhino and buffalo.
This dynamic placement combines the adventure of living in the true African bush on the slopes of Mt Kilimanjaro - Africa’s highest peak - with the amazing Indian Ocean coast close to Dar es Salaam, the Capital.
In both locations you will be involved in a diverse and exciting mix of community, conservation and ecotourism projects - the Three Leaps.
Through the variety of this placement you will experience the many different faces of this amazing and humble country.

Helping How? African Bush Phase Based close to Arusha in Northern Tanzania - ‘the safari capital’ which is located near to the slopes of Mt Kilimanjaro and a short distance from some of the world’s best game parks - the Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Manyara and Serengeti.
Leap 1 - Eco-Lodge/Safari Camps Help in camps and lodges such as: Masai Lodge in Arusha and Kiboko Lodge adjacent Lake Manyara National Park. Assist chefs with food preparation, general maintenance, welcoming guests on arrival and setting up camps. Taking part in cultural tours and setting up picnic sites.
Leap 2 - Community- Feeding and caring for disabled children in orphanage centers and playing and coaching sports.
- Tree planting around Arusha and Lake Manyara.
- Teaching woman and children about HIV/AIDS in schools.
- Help the Kibosho mission with teaching young children sports, music and arts.
- Working with street children and teaching them about the effects of drug abuse.
Leap 3 - Conservation Assist the Tanzania Wildlife Research Institute with hyena, cheetah and lion bio-diversity projects. Some of these projects take place in the laboratory in Arusha with frequent field trips to the Serengeti National Park.
In addition, building animal hides and viewing platforms for animal and bird identification.
Indian Ocean Coast Phase You will be based in Dar es Salaam, one of Tanzania’s main cities, which has a bustling coastal port and located at the coast on the Indian Ocean. The beaches are wonderful with great opportunities to dive, snorkel and explore the coral reefs.
Leap 1 - Community- Teach English in secondary and primary schools
- Work with street children at the Dogodogo Centre teaching English, sport, music, art etc.
- Participate in village projects such as school classroom construction and feeding young children.
- Assist the village Museum in restoring the traditional houses and artifacts.
Leap 2 - Conservation- Help restore the coral reefs by teaching fishermen about the dangers of fishing by using dynamite.
- Roots and Shoots Environmental Club: tree-planting projects with primary schools.
Adventure Volunteers will get weekends off to travel and explore independently.- Climbing Mt Kilimanjaro.
- Safaris to the Serengeti or Ngorongoro Crater.
- Scuba diving and snorkeling at the coast.
