This placement would suit... Volunteers keen to gain hands-on experience of working with animals in Africa as part of a team Lilongwe currently has a small zoo facility, but due to a lack of resources the animals are neither well fed nor cared for and educational value is very limited. It is only for a small number of well wishers that the animals survive. Enclosures remain dirty, bare and in a state of disrepair. As a volunteer on the Malawi Wildlife Centre you will help to rehabilitate injured and rescued animals and be involved in a programme that will have them relocated back to the wild. You will also be involved in constructing rehabilitation areas and convalescence enclosures to ensure the survival and future re-integration of these threatened animals into the wild. The Wildlife Centre is not just about preserving and rehabilitating wildlife, it also works closely with the local community to educate and provide income to local people. For this reason your work will be incredibly varied. Your work will consist of animal care (volunteers are needed to feed and care for animals that can no longer be released into the wild - such as yellow baboons, vervet monkeys, duiker and many more), education work within the wildlife education centre, construction work to help complete, improve and expand the Centre over the next few years, running guided tours for visitors to the Centre and design and artwork for information boards. You will also potentially have the chance to be involved in the release of wildlife that the Centre has cared for. This is an exceptionally rare opportunity and will give you the chance to see first-hand how your work impacts on the animals you will be caring for.Animals currently housed in the Centre include: yellow baboons, vervet monkey, blue monkey, leopard, hyena, duiker, grysbok anda variety of smaller mammals. As a volunteer on this Project you will help to make the new Lilongwe Wildlife Centre a facility that Malawian’s can be proud of. Sights and Activities included: Malawi, Lilongwe, Lake Malawi, Safari and/or visit to the Lake for snorkeling, wind-surfing or diving. Our users say:"I loved my time in Africa and I think that I have gained more confidence in myself and also a more balanced view of the world. I will definitely travel to Africa again. It went beyond my expectations - I think that it is hard to put a price on an experience like this - I couldn’t have spent the money in a better way." Elinor Fewster, Malawi Project 2006 "A life changing experience and a real eye opener. Our leader, Marc is an absolute credit to the Quest organisation. He enabled everyone to have a great time whilst keeping an eye on everybody. Beth was extremely helpful made me feel comfortable and was very reasurring. Keep doing what your doing! Rosalind Cooke, Malawi Project 2006 "Just want to thank you for everything, it was an absolutely incredible experience and did things I never thought physically or mentally I could. I loved every minute. It has been so hectic since I got back and all I want is to be back out there." Kate Daniels, Malawi Project & Explorer 2006
