Coach and compete in rowing at one of the top clubs in Perth, Western Australia

You'll coach various squads at the club and also beginners, then train with and possibly compete for one of the squads at the club. If you're an excellent rower or you just row for fun, this club has got everything!

Australia is renowned for having some of the best rowers in the world. With the great natural facilities they have, it is no wonder they are one of the best.

You will work as an assistant coach at one of the best rowing clubs in Western Australia where you will have the opportunity to coach a wide variety of abilities from total beginners to experienced rowers. On the rowing project you will also have the opportunity to train and possibly compete for one of the many male or female teams at the club.

If you're an excellent rower, you may be able to compete at the highest levels in WA. If you're just a social rower, you'll still be allocated to a team.

The club we work with has a very lively social scene and you will be welcomed with open arms.

As the main rowing project won't occupy all your time, during the daytime you'll work on the Refugee Sports Project. Here you can coach a number of other sports for around 4-5 hours every day, leaving your evenings free to coach and train with the rowing club.

The Rowing Project

You'll work at a rowing club located on the beautiful Swan River, overlooking the skyline of Perth. The club is also very conveniently located close to your accommodation.

There are excellent facilities and you'll have the opportunity to coach a number of squads at the club. You'll also have the opportunity to coach, train, and possibly compete for the senior men's and women's teams, if you get selected. Training and coaching takes part in the afternoon/evening.

The club has a large number of squads that you will be able to get involved in either in a coaching capacity or in a training and competing role. The club have the following squads:
  • 14 - 18 x 2 boys teams
  • Elite Squad Men’s and women’s (only during the off season)
  • Men’s and Women's veterans 28+
  • Pennant Men's and Women's squad (generally, 18 - 30 year olds)
  • Sub Juniors - under 15s
The club has a long term established learn to row scheme where by members of the public can come to the club to learn to row which will hopefully encourage more people to take up the sport. They are the only club to offer this program in Perth and as a volunteer you will be getting involved with this scheme as well as coaching other squads at the club.

The rowing season and coaching times

The rowing season and coaching season runs from:
  • March - Mid Sept
  • Pre season: Feb - mid March (limited coaching available)
  • September - March (off season, training only for elite squads)
Coaching and training times are as follows:
  • Monday - Friday 4:30pm - 5:30pm junior squads
  • Monday - Friday 5:30pm - 7:30pm senior squads
  • Sunday (and possibly Saturday) 9am - 10:30am Learn to row scheme
If you wish to compete and train you will be allocated into a squad depending on your ability. Each squad trains on the water twice a week and once in the squad’s gym session, known as the 'house of pain' (not compulsory, if you don't like pain!) Regattas take place on the weekends during the season. Out of season there will be no opportunity to compete at the club.

Perth was built on the banks of the magnificent Swan River over 150 years ago and is now a city rich in culture and filled with theatres, art galleries and museums. The city is modern and vibrant - a fun, friendly and 'laid back' place, with clear skies and a sunny climate. Western Australia is locally known as the 'state of excitement!'

Some of its more famous attractions include Kings Park, Scarborough Beach, Fremantle and the Swan River. Fremantle (or as the local’s call it, ‘Freo’) is the city’s port and is rich in history. At weekends you will find markets, entertainment and plenty of alfresco style cafes to laze in.

Perth has restaurants to suit all tastes - the most popular cuisine is, of course, the great Australian BBQ. Barbeque facilities are abundant in local parks - take your own food and cook up a feast, Australian style!

For meals in local restaurants, a trip to Perth's inner city centre is well worth the effort - it bustles with activity and offers a range of choices of restaurants.
