The panda reserve in Chengdu was created in 1963. This reserve is the earliest, largest and best-known panda reserve in China. It was placed on UNESCO Man and Biosphere Reserve Network in 1980.
Sixty-seven captive pandas are among 150 pandas in the Giant Panda Reserve managed by the China Conservation and Research Centre for the Giant Panda. The Centre was founded in 1980 with assistance from World Wildlife Fund.
Following training you will either work as an assistant to a Panda keeper, or as an interpreter in the Panda Garden. Panda keeper duties include: Cleaning the bedroom and the garden for the giant pandas, preparing food, such as: carrot, apples, panda bread and biscuits, helping the scientists to collect the behavior data, assisting the vets, and providing medicinal care for the pandas. Interpreters work with English speaking groups who visit the reserve.
Optional Mandarin classes are available in Beijing for two weeks prior to departing for Chengdu.
