The region boasts Mount Kinabalu - the highest mountain in south-east Asia - and the oldest rainforests in the world, making Malaysia a magnet for travelers for many years. The beauty of Raleigh's Malaysian expedition is the opportunity to visit these natural wonders and work in some of the country’s most remote parts. Our 10 week expedition consists of three distinct projects, each lasting three weeks. An in-country induction and training week before the first phase prepares venturers for Raleigh life and a review at the end of the final phase allows time for reflection before departing for onward travel or home. Whether part of your summer vacation, career break or gap year, Raleigh’s 10 week programme is a worthwhile and unforgettable experience. A taste of what’s ahead on the 10 week expedition Community: Access to clean water and adequate schooling are two of the biggest challenges facing Sabah’s remotest communities. Raleigh is helping to improve the health and daily lives of the villagers in cut off communities by building schools and water systems. You’ll be living and working alongside villagers in Sabah’s remote communities, gaining a unique insight into the lives of the indigenous people, establishing life long friendships and making a lasting contribution. Environment: With the rich biodiversity and abundant wildlife of its rainforests, Sabah offers ample opportunities to help preserve the local habitat or make it more accessible working alongside resident scientists and rangers. You could take part in research projects around the highly protected and world renowned Danum Valley, contribute to preparatory work for a hanging suspension bridge or build a trail for scientists in Imbak Canyon to help preserve its pristine virgin jungle.Adventure: A unique three phase challenge - from the demands of trail blazing in the Crocker Range National Park to an exhilarating climb up Mount Kinabalu and a SCUBA diving conservation programme in Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park, assisting the Sabah Park’s Marine Research Unit with the international Reef Check project. A few words from an ex-venturer Charlotte Perrett talks about her time on expedition in Malaysia: "Learning about Sabah has been a real thrill, seeing the culture and traditions in action and really being in the varied surroundings in a way most tourists don’t get to, from the total isolation of Imbak to staying on the gorgeous Mamutick island." Short of time? If you’re short of time, Raleigh also offers shorter expeditions: four weeks (your choice of one of the above project phases) and seven weeks (your choice of two of the above project phases). You can also opt for our new five week option which combines a community or environment project with an exhilarating, team-based adventure challenge. We run four to 10 week expeditions in Costa Rica and Nicaragua, Malaysia and India throughout the year. Why choose Raleigh International?
