This placement would suit... people looking to work in community development through the medium of sport. You'll work with kids of a range of ages, helping them to live healthier, happier lives. The children and youths of Swaziland face a number of challenges every day. About 30% of children cannot afford schooling and with an unemployment rate of about 50%, a climate has been created where children often turn to crime. With more educational opportunities and structured, productive environments, these same children will have a greater chance to live a happier and crime free life. This project aims to give opportunities through sports. You can make your contribution by volunteering your sporting skills and ideas in rural communities where help is most needed. Volunteer RoleUsing sports as a medium, the programme aims to help disadvantaged children and young adults in the rural community areas. The principle behind the project is that by providing a structure and an environment in which to play, children and disadvantaged people will have the stimulation and direction to keep them busy and developing during their important formative years. Sports are a fun way to get children involved and with so many talented children in Africa, you could find Swaziland’s next sporting hero! Volunteer ResponsibilitiesAs a volunteer, you will be involved in a variety of important activities, with your main responsibility being the coordination of the sports initiatives. There are opportunities in 3 main sports (football, netball and volleyball), in which you will run daily training sessions and clinics. If you want, you can specialise in one or you can coach a whole range of sports - either way, there will be lots of excited and eager children attending your sessions to play! LocationLobamba and Manzini, Swaziland Accommodation and MealsOur accommodation is a comfortable backpacker lodge, within easy distance of your project. Rooms are dormitory style, with you sharing your room with other volunteers. All meals are included and are prepared on a rotational basis amongst the volunteers. This means that you will get the opportunity to demonstrate your culinary skills a few times each week!
