This placement would suit... sportspeople who would like to broaden the sporting opportunities for Ghanaian school kids to include hockey, a sport that is currently only available to top end schools. Hockey is one of the fastest growing sports in Ghana, with the potential to rival football in schools and clubs as a team participation sport. However, while young people in Ghana are keen to play, there are few opportunities outside of the top schools to do so and therefore children are limited in the range of sports they can play. Based in Ghana's capital Accra, this sports volunteer project aims to pass on the skills from enthusiastic volunteers to children who would otherwise not have the chance to play hockey. Volunteers do not need to have a vast knowledge of hockey or many years of experience in the game. The most important characteristics are to be flexible and motivated to help this emerging sport. By passing on your coaching knowledge, you will have the opportunity to influence the development of a key sport in a growing country and have the chance to learn more about a unique African culture. Volunteer PlacementYour volunteer placement will involve you working directly with a number of hockey clubs in Accra. The clubs will vary in terms of player ages and abilities, giving you the opportunity to work with people across the whole hockey scale. Volunteers are warmly received, as previous ones have contributed massively to the playing standard through their coaching and training input. Volunteer RoleYour main role will be to help provide a structured environment in which the local children can flourish. You will be assigned to a club in Accra (or a local town if you prefer a less urban environment) to work directly with the local hockey coaches. With support, you'll have the freedom to initiate any training schemes that you feel will benefit the players in their overall development. This can range from serious fitness drills to fun games that contribute to this overall aim. Volunteers can be as serious or as laid back in their approach as possible, with most finding a happy medium of their own. Volunteer responsibilities include:
Accommodation and MealsAll accommodation and meals are included on the programme. Outside of Accra, volunteers stay with a local-host family in order to provide them with a true cultural experience. The host family provide each of the 3 daily meals.
