This placement would suit... intrepid individuals who want to venture into rural Borneo, living and working alongside communities. You'll help out with the kids? education and spend time caring for horses.

You’ll have the opportunity to share the culture of a rural Bornean community whilst helping out at the local school, and riding and training the village horses.

Volunteer Role

The farm is classified as almost 100% eco-friendly. Local materials have been used for the farm buildings and its food is grown entirely organically. Daily activities will include:

  • Spending time in the local kindergarten teaching english
  • Interact with the tribeschildren
  • Tree planting
  • Learn about tribal traditions
  • General farm work
  • You could also find yourself on a lake cruise in one of the nearby National Parks!
  • Training of horses
Volunteers will have the chance to plant trees in the surrounding forests as part of the rainforest regeneration project, and to offset their carbon dioxide emissions for the year at the same time.

Those volunteers who enjoy riding will be able to go horse-riding in the jungle - surely a unique experience! Those who do not wish to ride will be able to help with grooming.

Location

The project is based in rural northern Sarawak, an area largely untouched by tourism. The nearest large city is Miri, which is the main tourist gateway to the national parks of Loagan Bunut, Lambir, and the Niah Caves.

Accommodation and Meals

As always, safety is paramount, so you will be staying in a comfortable farmhouse which is guarded at night. Up to three volunteers may share a bedroom, there are modern flush toilets. Rooms are tidied daily, and bed linen is provided. All meals are included.
