This placement would suit... anyone with a love for animals and seeing them in their natural enviroment. Willing to muck in with all types of work. Doesn’t mind being in a very remote area.

Sanbona is based about 4 hours from Cape Town airport.

Your volunteer placement at Sanbona Wildlife Reserve will see you working along side the experienced conservation department in the African bush. Be prepared to spend long days in the bush assisting with the various conservation activities. The terrain in the Western Cape of South Africa is very rugged with rocky escarpments and steep hills.

There are numerous exciting elements to this project and you'll be involved in a variety of tasks. Conservation on this Reserve involves assisting with exciting rehabilitation projects and you are likely to participate in many of the tasks listed below:

  • Game counts, monitoring and transect analysis
  • Game Introduction (if available and introductions take place during the time you're there)
  • Animal research projects
  • Alien vegetation control and rehabilitation of indigenous vegetation
  • Medicinal use of plants and vegetation biomes
  • Plant studies and identification
  • Animal habituation

  • Nocturnal studies
  • Camp outs in the bush
  • Bird monitoring - bird counts on the dam, species list, raptors, etc
  • Game fence management plan and removing old fences
  • Soil erosion control and grass planting
  • Construction and maintenance of bomas (these are the pens where animals are kept prior to their release into the wild)
  • General Reserve maintenance: this can include assisting with road building, walls, boundaries, fences, etc
  • Maintenance of the nursery of indigenous plants
  • Introduction to firearms
  • Photography

The accommodation comprises of six large rooms, a common room and dining room / kitchen area. The rooms are all en-suite and accommodate 3 volunteers per room.

The common area consists of a seating area with Sky TV, video/DVD player and a music system. There is a self-service bar for any refreshments, plus a pool table and darts board for socialising. The common area has a Braai (barbecue) area and a swimming pool for volunteers to relax and use as they please.

There is nothing nicer than spending time out in the dusty bush under hot sun and feeling happily exhausted and satisfyingly sweaty and dirty ... and then coming home and falling into a refreshing swimming pool to cool off!!
