This placement would suit... anyone with an enthusiasm for teaching and a desire to learn!![]() English is becoming more and more useful in Central America, opening up opportunities for further study, jobs in the tourism sector and jobs with international organizations. English is undoubtedly the international language of commerce and is therefore extremely important for countries such as Mexico especially since one of its main trading partners is the United States. The office of Projects Abroad in Mexico is based in Guadalajara, the second largest city in Mexico after the capital, Mexico City. The schools in Guadalajara often struggle to get teachers who speak fluent English. The most suitable candidates are often tempted away by higher salaries in the private sector. The main focus is on building your students' confidence in communicating in English. You will find that the students want to hear what life is like in your hometown, and why you have chosen to come to Mexico. Our volunteers can choose to work in primary schools, secondary schools or at the University of Guadalajara. If you want to go to a smaller, more traditional Mexican town why not consider Ciudad Guzman which is situated about two hours away from Guadalajara. You will soon find yourself known as one of the few 'gringos' in town!
All volunteers are allocated a supervisor within their placement and also have the backup of our staff in the local office and the UK office. Accommodation is with local ‘host’ families; as well as providing support, advice and an insight into Mexican family life, host families also provide three meals per day which tend to be traditional recipes and give volunteers a great opportunity to sample a range of Mexican delights! Our users say..."Teaching in a foreign country is an incredible way to get to know a different culture and way of life. Although extremely challenging, teaching at a secondary school in Mexico was an amazing opportunity to practise my Spanish as well as learn masses that I didn't know before about my own language. I have also made friends and learnt lessons that I will treasure forever" - Charlotte Morley.
