This placement would suit... anyone with an enthusiasm for teaching and a desire to learn!

At Projects Abroad we are particularly proud of our teaching project in Peru. This project has been designed carefully to improve the learning of the students and the teaching of the teachers in the Andes.

We are working closely with the Peruvian Education Ministry on a 5-year scheme to update the English curriculum for the Andean region. Twenty-three schools in and around the Sacred Valley between Cusco and Machu Picchu were selected to join the pilot programme. Until 4 years ago, the schools in Peru’s Sacred Valley did not offer English on their curriculum.

Teaching and Projects Abroad The only possibility of learning English was through teachers who themselves only spoke a very basic level of English. Although remote, the Sacred Valley attracts many tourists which necessitates the knowledge of English in order to work in tourism. So 4 years ago a member of the Teaching & Projects Abroad staff came up with an English syllabus and thanks to an agreement with Cusco’s Ministry of Education, was able to establish it in 23 schools.

Every year the Ministry provide a teacher and we provide a specified quota of volunteers.

From January to March, the volunteers teach English to local teachers and for the rest of the year they teach English to children between the ages of 12 and 18. The average size of a class is 40 and the volunteer is expected to work for at least 4 hours per day.

All of our projects offer a truly rewarding experience for you, the children and the staff you work with. Seeing the results of your efforts makes it clear what a worthwhile project it is that you are part of!

All volunteers are allocated a supervisor within their placement and also have the backup of our staff in the local office and the UK office.

Accommodation is with local ‘host’ families; as well as providing support, advice and an insight into Peruvian family life, host families also provide three meals per day which tend to be traditional recipes and give volunteers a great opportunity to sample a range of Peruvian delights!

Teaching and Projects AbroadOur users say...
"I had an amazing experience in Peru, I loved it. I think TPA was really good because rather than showing you the culture, they just kind of let you find it out for yourselves. What made my visit good was the Peruvian people, culture, other volunteers and my family." - Lizzy Wilson
