This placement would suit... Lattitude placements suit individuals with a can-do attitude who are willing to make the most of their placement and above all enjoy it. We especially look for volunteers with interests in extra-curricular activities such as sports or music

The Kingdom of Thailand, formerly known as Siam is an exotic, tropical country with a very rich cultural heritage and diversity of people and a great gap year destination. The Thai people are a gentle, friendly and gracious race, always ready to forgive.

Your placement

Lattitude placements in Thailand are within in primary schools. The Thai Ministry of Education has targeted the improvement of the use of English by children of primary school age as one of its major educational programmes for the years to come.

Class sizes are usually around 35, but can be up to 50 pupils. Resources available vary a great deal. It is expected that volunteers will be involved in class-room teaching of English for up to 16 hours per week. Some schools require syllabus-guided teaching; others expect the volunteers to come up with their own ideas at the appropriate level. All schools would like volunteers to help build up their “English” resources: worksheets, games etc. Volunteers may also be asked to get involved in extra curricular activities. These may include sport, drama, music and extra English teaching for the Thai school teachers.

When can I go?

Placements start in November or May and are generally 4.5 – 5 months long.

Locations

There is a mixture of both rural and urban schools based around Nan / Phrae / Chiang Mai / Bangkok / Chonburi / Rayong and Prachuap Khiri Khan.

Accommodation

Volunteers will receive free accommodation on or near the school premises. Types of accommodation include: teachers' hostels, independent accommodation on school grounds, with a host family or teaching staff. As the schools are mostly day schools, weekday lunches and usually breakfast (or money towards) will be provided. As a general rule - volunteers should expect to provide evening meals and all meals at the weekends for themselves.

Qualities / skills

Imperative are resourcefulness and determination/resilience. Volunteers will teach classes of up to 50 children and are expected to make their own lesson plans. Volunteers need to have a good standard of written and spoken English and a genuine, proven interest in being with children. A one week Teaching skills course prior to commencement of project is held in Bangkok for your preparation as English teachers.

Our users say

I have so many fantastic memories of my time in Thailand, ranging from riding elephants and skydiving, to hearing my class of forty ten-year olds shouting ‘red lorry, yellow lorry’! I’m so glad I took a Gap Year. I’m a more confident, more independent person. And in a bigger way, it made me realise how much more there is to see in the world! It also showed me just how vast the range of opportunities available to everyone really is, as long as you’re willing to put the effort in to get where you want to be. It’s a good lesson to learn, and I can’t think of a better way of learning it!
