![]() Your placementVolunteering in a school is an ideal way to get to know New Zealand. Your work will be in a school in either the North or South Island. In boarding schools, duties may involve the supervision of younger pupils on some evenings and some weekends and volunteers who have attended day schools in the United Kingdom should be aware that life in a boarding school extends before and beyond the 9:00am to 4:00pm pattern.
Equally, outdoor pursuits is an important part of the programme and in these cases Duke of Edinburgh Awards will be an advantage. In short, the placements offer a variety of jobs, some of which will be tedious, but the overall opinion of the volunteers is that their year has been 'awesome'! When can I go?
Locations/accommodationPlacements are in both the North and South Island, mainly in boarding schools. There are a few day schools where the volunteer lives with a host family. Our users say...I worked in the primary school of an independent school (4-18 years) just outside Auckland. I was there from 8.30-3, monday to friday with weekends and bank holidays off, as well as 2 blocks of 3 weeks holiday. I was mainly involved in music and performing arts but also kindergarten, PE and year 6 English, Maths and generally a bit of everything! Usually I assisted in the classroom and helped the ones who were struggling, or in the case of the kindergarten, pushed swings until I couldn't do it any more!
