This placement would suit... everyone with a genuine love of working with children and an interest in education. You will need to have patience and have as much energy as your students and although you do not require any special skills, any experience working with children or young people would be valuable. Teaching children is a rewarding experience but it’s also unpredictable so come prepared! We include the i-to-i 40 hour online TEFL course to help with your preparation.
 From the Red River Delta in the north to the Mekong Delta in the south, the laid back beaches of Nah Trang to the tropical jungles of Bach Ma National Park, Vietnam is a true jewel in the crown of South East Asia.
We work with several state primary schools throughout Hanoi to offer English skills to eager pupils. Teach English in Vietnam and your classes will be full of young, energetic children usually with low levels of English. A few schools also have some special needs children. Your help is needed to plan fun learning activities to increase speaking and listening skills, such as story telling, singing and playing games. You will usually be an assistant but in some cases you may lead your own class.
Project details:
In Vietnam, volunteers work at a range of government-run and private schools, located in different areas of Hanoi. The schools are generally large, with over 1000 pupils, and there may be more than 40 pupils in each class. Most just offer Primary school education, while others cater for Primary, Secondary and High school students. The schools are mixed gender and you could be teaching children aged between 6 and 18, depending on which school you are allocated to. Levels of English amongst the younger students are fairly low, but they are enthusiastic learners. Some of the High School students have a good level of English, but they are often shy about speaking and need encouragement to practise conversation.
Why the project needs volunteers:
There is a huge demand for English teachers in Vietnam, as most young people are very keen to learn English. In a developing country like Vietnam, learning English can create great opportunities and improve the job prospects of many young people. Few Vietnamese school children have the opportunity to learn from a native English speaker, and to develop areas of English that are not covered in their school syllabus, such as conversational English.
Your role as a volunteer:
Your role will be as assistant teacher, although as you gain confidence and experience there may be the opportunity to lead classes. The main teacher will focus on the tuition of grammar, while you will be expected to practise conversational English with the children. English textbooks issued by the Ministry of Education will be provided, but you must be prepared to teach English through a variety of methods, including drama, debates, games and songs. There may be the opportunity to teach other subjects, such as IT. You may also be required to help develop English teaching resources or improve the language skills of the permanent English teachers.
Where the project is based:
The schools are located in various districts of Hanoi, within walking distance or a bus ride away from your accommodation. Hanoi is a pleasant city with a European feel, and you will find many attractive lakes, parks and boulevards to explore. Hanoi is less polluted and noisy than Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam's largest city, and is home to many interesting museums, temples and pagodas. You will be staying in a guest house in the lively Old Quarter of Hanoi, where you will have easy access to internet cafés, banks and shops.
You will need to fly into Hanoi on the advertised arrival date.

The first weekend I arrived I went on a boat cruise to Halong Bay, the second to the beautiful beaches at Cat Ba and the third, trekking in Mountainous Sapa.
