This placement would suit... anyone who wants to have a laugh, work hard, give back and go MAD! Venturing into the developing world with Madventurer will see you welcomed into a rural community where you'll live amongst, work alongside and teach the locals. An experience that simply can't be put into words (I get all the tough jobs!!!). In Tanzania our past building endeavours have mainly involved erecting school buildings but might also involve constructing toilet facilities or provision of adequate drinking water. No project is ever considered unless it has been requested by the host community and has been judged, by our well experienced people on the ground, to be sustainable!! Thus you can be sure you'll be making a real difference to your hosts standard of living!A teaching scheme is the other major element in our projects. The curriculum often looks to improve the English language skills of the local people but is only limited by your imagination! Tanzania as a nation is just entering it's early 40's but we've looked long and hard and can't see any signs of mid-life crisis setting in. Considered one of the calmer, more stable African nations, you won't find Tanzania blowing it's money on flashy, over-powered sports cars or wandering around town with a girl old enough to be it's daughter. Indeed, it would be difficult for Tanzania to support such a lifestyle as it remains one of the poorest nations on the planet. Average income is around $330 with life expectancy currently around the mid-to-late forties and falling due to the AIDS pandemic. 12 million people are deemed to be living below the poverty line and around 80% of the population makes a living from agriculture. Despite it's problems tourism has rapidly become a vital means of income for Tanzania, and it's little surprise! The open plains of the Serengeti are amongst the first images most bring to mind if asked to describe Africa. The 'Big Five' are there to be spotted on safari. In addition, Tanzania is home to the iconic peak of Mount Kilimanjaro. Said to be the highest peak in the world trekkers can walk to the top of (i.e. none of this ice axe malarchy!), it towers 5,895 metres above sea level and provides a worthwhile challenge for lovers of the outdoors. The sizeable Lake Victoria, or part of it at least, can also be found in the north of the country. Then there's the 'Spice Island' of Zanzibar with it's Eastern influences and over 120 ethnic groups on the mainland providing a truly unique cultural mix. The region has strong links with the great Victorian explorers and, indeed, the Tanzanian town of Ujiji, on the shores of Lake Tanganyika, played host to the famous meeting between, yes...you presume correctly, Dr Livingstone and Stanley.Tanzania offers the tourist what many would consider as the archetypal African experience. However, if this isn't enough, and you want an extra dimension of integration and a wealth of memories most visitors to Tanzania won't even come close to having, then a Madventurer project might be just what you're looking for! Why not add an East African overland adventure to your Madventurer package and unlock more of this thrilling continent?
