This placement would suit... anyone with an enthusiasm for teaching and a desire to learn! Our teaching volunteers are sent to a number of different schools and nurseries in and around the town of Mahachai, one hour south of Bangkok. We also have some placements further south in Chumphon. In nurseries, volunteers teach children as young as 3 and in secondary schools the students can be up to 22 years old. Inevitably class sizes are big, some with more than 50 students, although often these can be divided between 2 volunteers. Volunteers are expected to work between 4 and 8 hours per day depending on the placement. Lesson plans are important and volunteers in the past have found story-telling, drawing, singing, group work and vocabulary-based games to be popular approaches and useful in maintaining the children’s attention and in encouraging them to speak and sing in English. A normal school day starts at 8:30am and lunch will be provided at 11:30. The day ends by about 14:30pm and your weekends will be free for you to travel and explore the surrounding areas of Thailand. Although the teachers will not be taking the lessons with you, they will always be present to help with order and control of the classroom. Your experience as a volunteer will depend on you as an individual. If you really get involved with your teaching role and make the most of the opportunity, you will find it can be extremely rewarding. As long as you are motivated, try your best and are willing to invest time and energy in teaching, everything will work out fine and run smoothly. All volunteers are allocated a supervisor within their placement and also have the backup of our staff in the local office and the UK office. Accommodation is with local ‘host’ families; as well as providing support, advice and an insight into Thai family life, host families also provide three meals per day which tend to be traditional recipes and give volunteers a great opportunity to sample a range of Thai delights! Our users say..."We went on many excursions to hot springs, caves, jungles, temples and silk workshops… I was quickly accepted into the community, I got used to their way of life and I quickly grew to love the school and community. I learnt many invaluable lessons about the other cultures and way of life." - Felicia Line
