This placement would suit... anyone with an enthusiasm for teaching and a desire to learn! Our teaching projects in Senegal are based in and around the city of St Louis, around 4 hours north of the busy capital Dakar. Here, demand for English teachers is very high. This is especially the case amongst the senior schools because English is in most cases the student’s third language. There also tends to be plenty of scope for teaching other activities such as sport, drama and other subjects. Most volunteers are placed in secondary schools where the students range from 11 to 22 years old depending on the school. There are also placements working with adults and even some in a military camp! On average a class has 30 pupils but it could have as many as 50.
All volunteers are allocated a supervisor within their placement and also have the backup of our staff in the local office and the UK office. Accommodation is with local ‘host’ families; as well as providing support, advice and an insight into Senegalese family life, host families also provide three meals per day which tend to be traditional recipes and give volunteers a great opportunity to sample a range of Senegalese delights! St Louis Island, in the mouth of the Senegal River, was one of the first European settlements in West Africa. French influence is everywhere from the sound of French being spoken on the streets to the beautiful but crumbling colonial buildings. With its traditional fishing villages scattered along the coast and its reputation for being one of the indigenous cultural centres of West Africa, St Louis offers volunteers the chance to get a true taste of modern-day Senegalese life. Our users say..."To be honest, I think I gained as much from the school as they got from me. I learnt to make friends with adults from a different culture, and I learnt a lot from the kids about growing up – not only in myself but in them, their culture and their lives. I had a fantastic time!" - Anne-Marie Wortley
