At the school, volunteers will find themselves teaching English to students aged anywhere from 5 to adults. The colegio is a bilingual private school and children from a variety of backgrounds from ages five up to adults. Teaching English and subjects taught in English comprise at least half of the curriculum, and so assistant teachers whose native language is English are in great demand. Volunteers can also assist in other activities such as sports (football, rugby and hockey) if they choose. Those with a high level of Spanish can opt to take part in other lessons in Spanish. The school has also recently won an award for excellence in Education. Why the project needs volunteers: The children who attend the school do not often get the chance to practice English, and therefore volunteers are needed to focus on conversational English. Volunteers will be teaching assistants in the classroom, and they will supplement the lessons by helping students with conversation and pronunciation as native English speakers. Additional activities include English workshops with student's parents and one-on-one coaching sessions with teachers. English is a much sought after skill in Argentina, opening up doors to advanced educational opportunities and career choices. Your role as a volunteer: Volunteers will be assistant teachers helping the school's regular English teachers by providing native English speakers' conversation and pronunciation skills. Volunteers can also get involved in assisting teaching sports. An additional option is to assist in the running of occasional English workshops for student's parents. If a volunteer has a specific topic (e.g. A trade), this would be communicated with the coordinator prior to arrival, in order to prepare these classes. It will also be possible to assist in English coaching classes for the staff of the school. The idea is to work not just with the students, but the community of the school as a whole. This project is ideal for people who are interested in pursuing a career in teaching as it will give them the opportunity to have some hands-on practical experience. If you have a high level of Spanish then you can get involved in teaching other classes within the school, please let the operations team know if you are interested in taking part in this option. Where the project is based: The school is a bilingual school that follows the Argentine national curriculum. The school draws its student body from a range of socioeconomic backgrounds, and the students are at many different levels of ability. The school is located in Villa Urquiza, a residential area in Capital Federal, Buenos Aires. Buenos Aires is Argentina's largest city and its capital, and offers volunteers the opportunity to experience one of the most cosmopolitan, lively and dramatic cities in the world. You will be staying in a hostel near to all the main facilities in the centre with breakfast included. You should fly into Buenos Aires Airport (EZE).Known as both Ezeiza and Pistarini.
