This placement would suit... People who want to make a real difference to someone else's life and have an interest in gaining first hand experience in South American culture.

Buenos Aires is a 24-hour city - lively, frenetic, with lots to see and do. Teaching is available in children's homes, primary and secondary schools and social assistance centres.

Teaching is available in a variety of homes, where the residents may be children, teenagers or single mothers. Often the residents come from deprived or abusive backgrounds and have been taken into care by the justice department. Usually they attend school during the week but most have to return to their homes over the weekend, which is often unpleasant for them. Despite these disadvantages, the children are usually warm and friendly and they need and respond well to care, and affection. In several homes children suffer from behavioural problems and may be far behind in their classes. Volunteers are needed to provide very basic English teaching through playing or singing with the children. All of the children are starved of affection, and volunteering in any home can be a challenging task. In order to work in most of the homes you must have a reasonable knowledge of Spanish because these children or teenagers have no knowledge (or very limited knowledge) of English.

An example of one of the many homes that we are working with is "Hogar Los Querubines". This is a home for children whose parents are infected with HIV or whose parents have died from HIV. There are 12 children living at this home, two of whom recently tested positive for HIV.

We also work with a number of private schools in Buenos Aires where the children come from middle class backgrounds. Despite this, they are not usually the richest schools and some of the children are there because they have been awarded a scholarship. To teach in a school you don't need to be able to speak Spanish as you will nearly always be an assistant to the regular English teacher.

Finally we cover adult courses which are spread across a variety of institutions where you could be asked to teach adults of all ages. Often class sizes are small and you will usually be in sole charge of the class.

Please note: This project can be combined with Spanish lessons or with dance lessons.

Travellers’ placements are very flexible and can be combined with any other Travellers placement and tailor made to your requirements!
