This placement would suit... Someone keen to try their hand at teaching and who wants to experience the real India. With Changing Worlds you can teach in primary or secondary schools in Kerala and Tamil Nadu. You’ll need to love children (they will certainly love you!) and to be able to adapt to life in the hot, noisy bustle of southern India.

Where are the placements?
Our teaching placements are all in southern India within the states of Tamil Nadu and Kerela. You can work within the city of Chennai (formerly called Madras) or we can place you in more isolated rural areas surrounded by mountains and forests in the Western Ghats.

In all cases you will be working with middle class Indian children. The standard of their English is limited and the schools see the input of volunteers as crucial to raising these levels. All classes are taught in English language.

You can choose to work with primary aged children (4 to 7 years old) up to secondary and pre university adults (up to 18 years of age). Our schools tend to be mixed schools often affiliated to a Christian organisation although Changing Worlds is not a religious group and this is not a pre requisite to applying to us.

Changing Worlds can offer you a choice of placements although we are determined by the needs of the various establishments at any given time. We ask all volunteers to be flexible after all this is India!

What will I do?
You will work primarily as a teacher of English language. The schools conform to a national curriculum that encourages the use of strict grammar rules and conditions. This can make it quite demanding for volunteers but with increased confidence you will find you quickly get used to working under these guidelines.

If you are prepared to turn your hand to other subject areas this will be very well received. In the past volunteers have taught maths, geography and science depending on their areas of expertise.

Teaching in IndiaThe biggest impact you can make is not necessarily in the classroom. We encourage all volunteers to take an active role in extra curricular activities - namely sport, drama, music and art. As in the UK these are areas of learning where over worked teachers find it hard to make time to get involved. This is great fun and builds excellent relationships with the children in your care.

In all cases you are working side by side with local colleagues. We are anxious that volunteers are not replacing local staff by rotating our support around different schools.

Where will I live?
You will live in or near the school where you will work. In the past some volunteers have walked to work whilst some have invested in a cheap bicycle to get them to and from the children’s home.

Accommodation is very basic but safe. You will share a room with at least one other Changing Worlds volunteer. You will have access to toilet and shower. You may need to get used to washing in a bucket that is the Indian way of taking a shower!

All food and drinking water is provided although we do suggest you budget a further £15 a week for fresh fruit and vegetables as the food served can become monotonous.

What support do I get?
Changing Worlds will brief you in the UK before you depart. We introduce you to the sensitive issues of culture, safety and health. You will be met on arrival to Chennai. We organise a few days relaxing in the city at the YWCA. Krish the Changing Worlds representative will introduce him self and tell you more about what lies ahead. Krish will have organised your transport to the placement. Krish will keep in regular contact with you and your hosts throughout your placement period to see if all is well. If you have a work related problem then you first contact is the head teacher of the school.

What do I need?
You will require a six-month tourist visa for India (cost £30). Changing Worlds will brief you on how to obtain the visa. You will need to gain adequate travel insurance for your entire time overseas.

Am I eligible?
Yes, as long as you love children and are prepared to work long hours.

Teaching in IndiaWhat do I do in my free time?
You can expect to work during the week (about a two thirds timetable) so the weekends will be your chance to explore the local markets and temples. Students will enjoy taking you to their homes and introducing you to their extended families. During the school holidays (the school year starts in June and ends in April) you can go much further afield.

We are building a tiger safari in to our present programme that we hope all volunteers will wish to take part in.

What is the cost?
The cost for the three month placement is £2499. There is the option to extend to a maximum of six months at no extra charge. This covers return flights from London to Chennai, accommodation, food and drinking water, UK briefing, orientation on arrival and on going support whilst in India.

Changing Worlds can put you in touch with people who have done this placement before. Use the form below to contact us for more information.
