This placement would suit... Anyone with basic IT skills who would like to make a difference in the developing world. Ghana is the home of Africa's friendliest and most welcoming people, an intensely colourful land of dense forest, wild savannah and great beaches. In Ghana, Teaching & Projects Abroad have their main base in Cape Coast but are also in the capital city - Accra and the Akuapem Hills. The IT project in the Akuapem Hills is a fundamental way in which volunteers can help the local community. All you need is basic computer skills and the willingness to share the knowledge with teachers as well as students. The IT Centre was set up in April 2005 at Abiriw Primary School by a former Teaching & Projects Abroad volunteer. Our volunteers are essential for the running of the centre as the school does not currently have its own IT teachers. This means that part of your responsibilities will be making sure the local teachers are learning how to use the computers, as well as the students, so the teachers can continue using the computers with their students when there are no volunteers present. There is also a second centre nearby where volunteers can share their skills, working with different students to enable more of the community to learn these valuable skills. Teaching such a useful vocational skill is invaluable for the local community and provides the children with a range of job opportunities not previously available to them. Volunteers can also combine an IT project with teaching other subjects such as English, French or Maths according to their knowledge and ability. Our users say...“Definitely the best time of my life…I absolutely loved my time in Ghana and there isn’t anything I’d change about my placement… I loved living with a Ghanaian family and I would definitely go back again.” - Christina Dorkins
