This placement would suit... Anyone interested in working with children and young people in a fascinating and beautiful country. Costa Rica, in the heart of Central America, is a country of contrasts with a strong mix of landscapes and cultures and a fine range of volcanoes, tropical rainforests, magnificent waterfalls and beautiful sandy beaches. With the increase of tourism in the country learning English is now viewed as highly important to secure a decent job. On our teaching placements volunteers can provide effective, practical help with spoken English in a number of schools. Our teaching projects in Costa Rica are based in secondary schools in the city of Liberia in North-western Costa Rica. You will be teaching students between the ages of about 10 and 17 and there will usually be about 25 - 30 students in a class. The schools are in the centre of the city, normally less than 20 minutes' walk from your host family accommodation. In your free time you can meet other volunteers and travel around the country. You don’t need any previous teaching experience or qualifications before joining our projects. We have plenty of suggestions for games and activities which will help to stimulate the students’ minds and sustain their enthusiasm. Taking the time to prepare and structure lessons will help to give you confidence and ensure that you and your students get the most out of the experience. You will have a placement supervisor, normally a local English teacher, and of course the full back-up of our local office and in the UK. Our users say...“The children I taught were adorable and the volunteers were great friends. I cannot stress how great the experience was. I believe it has made me more independent and I have no problem in meeting new people and being in different situations.” - Anna Thompson
