This placement would suit... A motivated person with lots of initiative, an ability to communicate and a strong love of Africa Oyster offers challenging but rewarding teaching placements in rural Tanzania. We send you out as a group so you can share the lessons and the social life together. You’ll be based on the slopes of Mt Meru near a bustling town, game parks and Kilimanjaro. Past volunteers say they really enjoyed feeling part of the community and having a real role to play in it. What will I be doing? You’ll be teaching primary or secondary school children in and around Arusha. All teaching is in English, although you will need to learn some basic Swahili. In primary schools you’ll focus on teaching the language itself, but at secondary schools you might get to teach other subjects as well. It sounds daunting, but you’ll always be placed with another volunteer and you’ll be amazed at how quickly you get into it, coming up with great ideas for making lessons exciting, interesting, challenging and varied. Our volunteers have also gained huge satisfaction from organizing extra-curricular clubs for the children and really adding something to the school. We hold a pre departure course in the UK where you’ll meet fellow volunteers and get thorough preparation to help you with teaching and living in Africa. Where will I live? You and the other Oyster volunteers will share staff accommodation in the school grounds. It is basic, but fairly comfortable with access to a shower and toilet. How can I spend my free time? In your free time you’ll be able to meet up with friends in Arusha – a busy town with an interesting mix of the old and new (you’ll enjoy the traditional Masai market). During the school holidays you could visit Zanzibar, the tropical and exotic spice island, or climb Africa's highest mountain Kilimanjaro. You could go on safari or just relax beside the Indian Ocean. Oyster Worldwide support Our friendly UK team will be there to help you up to your departure, making sure that all the arrangements are made and that you are well-prepared. You’ll then be met on arrival by our local representative who has lived in Arusha for many years. She will run a short orientation course for you and your fellow volunteers, including Swahili training. You can go to her with any problems you don’t feel able to handle alone or to sort out with the school.
