This placement would suit... anyone who loves children and wants to fully immerse themselves in island life. As with all teaching posts you’ll be most successful if you can be patient and use your imagination to engage the children. There will be a range of activities to keep you busy so be prepared to muck in! Teaching placements always reward confidence and with this project you will get the i-to-i TEFL training course included to make sure you’re fit and ready to go! Thinking of teaching in Thailand? Always dreamed of spending your days on a tropical island beach? This project offers a rare opportunity to experience the joys of living and working on one of Thailand's best kept secrets - Koh Tao. As a volunteer you would be helping the children of Koh Tao to develop vital English speaking skills whilst soaking up all this island paradise has to offer. As well as passing on your language skills, you will also be educating the children about the ecology of their island and helping these future generations build and develop eco-tourism, now a huge part of island life. Koh Tao boasts breathtaking scenery, white sandy beaches and incredible snorkelling and scuba diving.Project details: You will be teaching in the main school on the island of Koh Tao - a nursery and primary state school that currently has around 100 pupils and approximately 6 staff during school term and at the Secret Garden conservation centre during school holidays (and weekends when possible) . Once the children understand basic English the school and the Secret Garden are very keen to incorporate a keen awareness of the islands ecology into their curriculum as tourism becomes an increasingly major factor in the islands future. You will be working under the co ordination of the Secret Garden Conservation centre as part of the Koh Tao environmental and educational program for the community. You will join other i-to-i conservation volunteers in the helping of the children`s weekend activities and help them to take care of the islands environment. Why the project needs volunteers: Thailand has a proud history of never having been colonised by the West and as a result has maintained her own distinct language, culture and tradition. The government did not focus on English language in the past but has recently acknowledged its value in terms of international development. Many schools are keen to employ native English speakers but can not afford to employ good paid staff. In many schools children do not actually get the chance to practise day to day conversation and the school in Koh Tao are really looking forward to volunteers bringing native English lessons to the classroom. Volunteers will need to focus on basic conversational English, which means helping students to speak simple English. By teaching young people English you will be able to make a positive impact on their lives and make more opportunities available to them, particularly as tourism is a growing industry on the island. Your role as a volunteer: You will be teaching basic conversational English and helping the other English teachers. You will need to spend time planning lessons and make things as interactive and stimulating as possible. You will also be involved in arranging and running other activities such as crafts, sports, conservation activities and games. School resources can be limited, so volunteers may like to bring teaching materials such as simple reading books, postcards, photos and picture dictionaries. You will also be involved in the weekends activities at the Secret Garden centre. Where the project is based: The project is based on the beautiful tropical island of Koh Tao. You will have you orientation in Bangkok before making your way by bus to the coast and taking a boat to the island for your project. Your accommodation will be a shared room in a local guesthouse, (bungalow resort), lunch will be provided by the project. Volunteers will be responsible for all other meals. Please book your flight to arrive into Bangkok (airport code BKK) on the advertised arrival date to ensure your airport pickup. Please note that we can normally arrange for an airport pick up at an additional fee if you are arriving early, please contact the office to arrange. "Teaching at school everyday was a challenging but rewarding experience. The children from school are beautiful and always full of energy and it was really special to be able to help prepare them for a better future on Koh Tao."
